Every hard surface sends its rain somewhere. Handled well, that water soaks in and feeds the ground. Handled badly, it takes your topsoil with it and dumps it, plus whatever it picked up, into the nearest lake.

    Shape & amendExcavate, grade the inflow, and build the soil profile that actually infiltrates.

    Plant & establishZoned planting: species that handle standing water at the bottom, drier-footed ones up the slope.

A rain garden is infrastructure that happens to be beautiful. If it only manages one of those two, it was built wrong.
