Where the salt actually goes

Stand at the end of a driveway on the south shore in February and follow the water in your head. Melt runs off the blacktop, down the gutter, into the storm drain at the corner. That drain is not connected to a treatment plant. It is a pipe to a creek, and the creek is a pipe to the lake.

That is the whole path. Nothing in between takes anything out.

Chloride does not go away

Salt is sodium chloride. Put it on pavement and it splits into sodium and chloride, and the chloride is the part that matters, because it does not break down, settle out, evaporate, or get eaten by anything.

One teaspoon permanently pollutes five gallons of water. Not temporarily. There is no practical way to get it back out at the scale of a lake.

Minnesota spreads something like 404,000 tons of chloride-containing salt on pavement every year. As of the 2024 impaired waters list, 67 waterbodies in this state are officially impaired for chloride and another 75 are close enough to be worth watching. Road salt is the single biggest source.

Every one of those started the way the driveway does.

A rain garden will not fix this

This is the part worth being straight about, because we build rain gardens and it would be easy not to mention it.

A rain garden is very good at the things it is good at. It slows water down, drops sediment out, takes up phosphorus and nitrogen, and keeps a surge from scouring a channel down your slope. Those are real and they are most of what comes off a residential lot.

Chloride goes straight through. It is dissolved, it stays dissolved, and no plant or soil layer is going to pull it out on the way past. All infiltrating it does is decide whether it reaches the lake this spring through the creek or in ten years through the groundwater.

So a rain garden is worth building and it is not a license to salt. If someone sells you one as the answer to this, they are selling you a rain garden.

Most of what gets spread never does any work

Here is the part that costs nothing to fix.

Twelve ounces of salt — a coffee mug — treats a twenty-foot driveway. That is about a thousand square feet, or ten squares of sidewalk. Most people put down three or four times that, because the bag is heavy and the spreading feels like the work.

Salt also stops working below about fifteen degrees. Below that it is grit sitting on ice doing nothing at all. The instinct on the coldest mornings is to put down more, and more is exactly the amount that does not help. If you need traction at that temperature you want sand, or a product actually rated for it.

And when the pavement is dry and you can still see white granules on it: that salt did not do anything, and it is waiting for the next rain to go to the lake. Sweep it up. Keep it in the bucket. You already paid for it.

Shovel first, salt second, and only where somebody actually walks. The twenty feet of driveway nobody sets foot on does not need any.

The brown strip along your driveway

You already know what this looks like even if you have not named it. A band of dead or scorched turf along the pavement edge, worst at the bottom of the slope and beside wherever the plow pile sat. Arborvitae on that side browning out on the road-facing half and fine on the other.

That is sodium and chloride, and it works two ways. Sodium wrecks soil structure and pushes calcium and magnesium off the soil particles, so the ground itself gets tighter and less able to hold what a plant needs. Chloride gets taken up and accumulates in the tissue until the margins burn.

Two things actually help. Flush the strip hard in spring once the ground thaws, with enough water to move salt down past the roots rather than a light watering that redistributes it. And stop replanting the same thing there. That edge is a harsh little microclimate — salt, plow damage, heat off the blacktop, the worst drainage on the property — and it wants species chosen for it rather than whatever matches the rest of the bed.

We do not spread it

We do not do snow and ice, so there is no version of this where we are telling you to use less of something we sell you.

What we deal with is the other end: the strip that comes back dead every April, the shoreline bed that keeps thinning, the drainage that sends everything off the drive into one corner of the yard. Those are fixable and some of them are fixable permanently.

The chloride is not. That part only goes one direction, and it is the one thing out here you genuinely cannot undo later.
