Read the water before you plant anything

Most planting problems are water problems wearing a costume.

The shrub that keeps dying in the same corner is not the wrong shrub. It is sitting where the downspout puts four hundred gallons after a storm. The bed that never fills in is on the high side of a grade and dries out by noon. The lawn patch that goes first every August is over a gravel seam.

None of that is visible on a nice day, which is when people usually walk a property and decide what to plant.

Walk it in the rain

This is the single most useful thing you can do on your own property, and it costs nothing.

Put boots on during a real rain, not a drizzle, and watch. Where does the water come from. Where does it collect. How long does it sit after it stops. Where does it leave the property, and is that a place you want it going.

Take pictures. You will not remember it accurately in April, and the wet map of a yard is not intuitive once the ground has dried.

Twenty minutes in a storm tells you more than an hour of standing in a dry yard guessing.

Grade decides, plants follow

Water goes where the ground points it, and grading is how you point it.

That is why the regrade came before anything else on the front yard job: away from the foundation, off the walkway, toward somewhere it can actually soak in. Every planting decision after that was made downstream of a decision already taken in soil.

Get this backwards and you spend years fighting the yard. Plant things that want dry ground in a spot that collects, then wonder why they rot. Or fix a wet basement with a sump when the actual problem is that the grade runs toward the house.

A rain garden goes where the water is, not where it looks nice

This is the one people push back on.

A rain garden is not a decorative feature that happens to hold water. It is a low spot, deliberately shaped and deliberately planted, sited where the water already wants to collect and where it can infiltrate.

Which means its location is mostly not up to you. You can adjust it, size it, shape the edges, choose everything growing in it. Where it goes was decided by the roof, the driveway and the grade before you got there.

Put one where the view is best instead and you have dug a hole that stays dry in July and does nothing in a storm.

Then plant what wants those conditions

Once you know the wet spots, the dry spots and the in between, plant selection stops being a guess.

Sedges and rushes in the bottom of a basin because they want wet feet. Prairie species on the high dry edge where the drainage is sharp. The transition band gets the things that tolerate both, and that band is usually wider than people expect.

A plant in the right conditions needs very little from you. A plant in the wrong ones needs you forever.

Right now is a good time to look

Fall storms are frequent enough to give you a real reading, the canopy is thinning so you can see the ground, and anything you learn now is in hand before spring, when the decisions get made and the work gets scheduled.
